What is Cannabis Flower?

Flower refers to the smokable part of the female cannabis plant. It’s covered in collections of trichomes, which give the buds their shiny appearance and sticky texture. Trichomes are responsible for producing several cannabinoids and terpenes, the different combinations of which produce your favorite strains.

Each strain has its own unique characteristics. For example, indica strains are known to be relaxing, stress-relieving, and sedative as they typically contain a higher cannabidiol (CBD) content and are associated with a more body-centered high. Sativa strains are known for their energizing, creative, and uplifting effects as they typically have a higher tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content and are associated with a more cerebral high. When these two main strains are combined a hybrid is formed which is known to balance out the extremes of the two original strains. High-CBD strains are another type of flower known to be CBD-dominant. Because they are known to be primarily therapeutic as opposed to producing psychoactive effects typically associated with THC, these strains have recently grown in popularity and are great for pain relief, reducing inflammation, and managing anxiety.

The cannabis flower cultivation process starts at the seed level and involves selecting the desired cannabis genetics and strains based on specific traits such as cannabinoid content, growth characteristics, aroma, and flavor profiles. Next, the cannabis growth process begins either outdoors or indoors as cultivators use soil, hydroponics which is the process of growing in water with added nutrients, or aeroponics, the practice of growing in a misted environment. Now is when the plant really begins to sprout and flourish as long as it is provided with the correct nutrients and watering routine.

Cannabis plants require a balanced supply of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, along with other micronutrients. Once the plants grow tall enough, cultivators prune and train them to maximize their growth and ensure the largest flower yield possible. During this time, growers take preventive measures such as inspections and organic or chemical insecticides in order to keep their plants pest- and disease-free. The last step in the cultivation process is the act of harvesting, drying, and curing the weed flower in a controlled environment to remove moisture gradually, improving flavor, aroma, and overall quality.

Anatomy of Cannabis Flower

Leaves

You probably know this one already. The iconic symbol of cannabis, the leaves are typically composed of multiple leaflets and are responsible for capturing sunlight for photosynthesis, helping the plant grow and thrive.

Flower

The reproductive budding part of the plant is the flower. This is where a high concentration of cannabinoids, such as THC and CBD, as well as terpenes that are responsible for the aroma, flavor, and effects of cannabis can be found.

Pistils

Pistils are known as the plant’s orange or red hairs present in the cannabis buds. Just like in any other flower, they are responsible for capturing pollen from male plants during pollination which allows the plant to then reproduce. Isn’t plant anatomy so cool?

Trichomes

An indication of the plant’s maturity and cannabinoid content, these tiny, crystal-like structures cover the surface of the cannabis flowers, leaves, and stems and give these areas a sticky or glossy appearance. They contain resin glands that produce cannabinoids and terpenes.

Sugar Leaves

Covered in trichomes, sugar leaves are smaller leaves that grow in and around the cannabis buds. They are often trimmed away during the harvesting process, but they can also be used to make concentrates or edibles.

Seeds

Cannabis seeds are developed in the calyxes as a result of pollination. Though they are usually removed before consumption as they are undesirable to consume, they are extremely useful when it comes to growing and cultivating more cannabis plants.

Flower's Effects

Thanks to its efficiency in terms of results, cost, and ease of use, flower is hugely popular. Though not as potent as other methods, smoking flower can lend the same end results, with the onset of effects beginning almost immediately. While it is simple to use and fast-acting, some people are deterred by the scent of cannabis that may linger in the air after a session.

When consumed, cannabis flower interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system which influences physiological processes like eating, anxiety, metabolism, learning, memory, growth, development, and more. Many people enjoy cannabis because of its psychoactive effects such as euphoria, relaxation, and altered perception, in addition to its ability to reduce pain and inflammation associated with conditions like arthritis, chronic pain, and more.

Does it make a difference how I consume cannabis?

The different ways of ingesting the plant play a role in how it affects the body. For example, when cannabis is inhaled in the form of smoking or vaporizing, the compounds in cannabis quickly enter the bloodstream through the lungs meaning that the effects happen almost instantly. When it is ingested in the form of eating, the compounds are metabolized by the liver before entering the bloodstream, slowing the process.

Pre-Roll

Pre-Roll

A joint is a disposable smoking option made by rolling cannabis in some sort of paper (i.e. hemp, rice or bamboo paper). Pre-rolls are exactly that, joints that have been pre-rolled for the consumer so that they’re ready to smoke whenever you are.

Pipe

GET INFO

Pipe

Hand pipes work by trapping the smoke released from burning flower for you to inhale. They are typically made of glass, though they come in a variety of different styles. Pipes are also usually pretty small and many people enjoy their stylistic diversity, as they come in virtually infinite designs.

Water Pipes

Water Pipes

Water pipes come in a variety of different styles, two of the most common being bongs and bubblers. Each of these utilizes water in the smoking process, which works to cool down the smoke prior to inhalation. Water pipes are made of many different materials including glass, ceramic, metal and wood.

How to Choose the Best Cannabis Flower

The search for the best cannabis flower is a very subjective journey. Effects can vary from consumer to consumer even when consuming the same dose. The best bet to finding your favorite strain is a game of trial and error. We suggest keeping a journal (we have these in store!) to log your effects. Many strains share genetics, so if you find something that tickles your fancy a bit of research into the lineage can go a long way into predicting what you may enjoy next.

Common Strains we typically have in stock-
Blue Dream- could be an indica or sativa depending on lineage- typically an uplifting and cerebral head high
GMO- Indica leaning – users report feelings of euphoria, relaxation and happiness
Runtz- Hybrid flower- euphoric, uplifting highs, giggly, relaxed
Chocolate OG- Indica Leaning- typically high TAC- prompts laughter and feelings of hunger
Mandarin Zkittles- Hybrid- typically high TAC- feelings of euphoria followed by full mind and body relaxation.

When it comes to choosing the best cannabis flower for you, consider your desired effects and your previous experience.
